Essential oil basics

essential oil basics

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils (EOs) are incredibly complex and highly concentrated. Each EO contains hundreds of different chemical compounds, all derived from plants. In plants, they help aid in regeneration of the cells, and they can work similarly with animals.

-Lifeblood of the plant (the plant’s immune system)

-Aromatic essences of trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, resins, and flowers

-Carry nutrients and oxygen to the different parts of the plant/organs in our body

-Penetrate the cell wall/membrane

-Can assist the body in cleansing from toxins, impurities, and other harmful substances.

-Can be immune-enhancing, mood-elevating, energizing, relaxing, manage stress and frustration, improve mental clarity, stamina-boosting

-Support the body’s natural defenses

-Aid in maintaining normal cellular regeneration

-High in antioxidants

-Promotes overall health, vitality, and longevity

-Greaseless

-Volatile (evaporates quickly)

-Potent and concentrated

-Never expire

-Usage dates back to 4500 BCE

The science behind essential oils

A question that I get asked all of the time is HOW do the oils work? Basically, the power of an oil is in its constituents. Each type of constituent carries a specific use with it.

An example is lavender. Lavender is made up of esters, alcohols, and monoterpenes. The qualities of lavender’s constituents tell us how we are able to use lavender oil for our benefit:

-Esters are soothing, balancing, and stress (emotion) releasing.

-Alcohols are cleansing.

-Monoterpenes are in every oil and basically magnify the other constituents in the oil.

Another neat scientific fact is that EOs are made up of very tiny molecules and have a unique ability to penetrate the cell wall. This enables the EOs to transport oxygen and nutrients inside the cell, thus giving more support to the immune system. Essential oils contain very powerful antioxidant, which create an unfriendly environment for free radicals that our bodies are in contact with daily. Free radicals come from sources outside your body, such as tobacco smoke, toxins, or pollutants, and can damage your body’s cells, proteins, and DNA by altering their chemical structure.

Dive into the properties of the key constituents in an essential oil, and you will learn amazing things about the oils themselves. One place I recommend checking out is PubMed.gov for further research and information.

use

EOs can be used in 3 main ways: topically, aromatically, and as a dietary supplement. Please look at the bottle and the Young Living website (each oil has its own informational page) for the recommended use for each oil.

TOPICAL:

-Apply oils directly on the desired area using 1-3 drops (start with 1 and build up).

-Some great places to apply topically include the feet, back, wrists, behind ears, base of skull, front of neck, and forehead.

-Dilution for Infants: 1-3 drops oil to 1 Tablespoon carrier oil (starting with 1 drop)

-Dilution for Children 5 and under: 1-3 drops oil to 1 teaspoon carrier oil (also starting slowly)

AROMATIC:

-Apply one drop to palm, rub palms together in circular motion, and Inhale with cupped hands over nose and mouth

-Inhale from bottle,   Wear in diffuser jewelry or as a perfume,    Place on cotton ball in air vents

-Use only a cool mist (no heat), ultrasonic diffuser

-The number of drops depends on the diffuser (Young Living’s Home Diffuser should use between 3 and 8 drops, depending on desired strength)

DIETARY:

-Add a drop or two to your water, juice, or tea,  Add to food while preparing

-Add to capsule (veggie “00” is common size)

-Place drop under tongue (sublingual)

safely

Carrier Oils are the fatty portion of the plant (seed, kernel, or the nut) that help to dilute essential oils prior to application.

We recommend diluting most essential oils with a carrier oil in order to make the oil last longer (both from the bottle and on the skin). Carrier oils can be such money-savers.

Because essential oils are so concentrated, diluting them doesn’t change the effectiveness!

-Some examples are V-6 (Young Living’s brand), vegetable, olive, grapeseed, almond, jojoba, and coconut oil.

-Do not use vegetable shortening, butter, margarine, or petroleum derivatives (such as petroleum jelly). These are not carrier oils.

These are questions that any essential oil company should be able to answer about their oils and practices. We encourage you to research and find out the answer to any of these questions before you use an EO:

  1. Do they own their own farms to grow the plants for the oils?
  2. Are these new farms that have formerly used herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals or are they older, established farms with a cleaner history (at least 50 years)?
  3. Can the company test their own oil composition in their own labs?
  4. Is there anyone on staff with a trained nose to analyze the oils by smell (there are less than 200 people in the world with this type of training)?
  5. If the company purchases oils from a supplier, do they visit the distilleries and farms?
  6. Does the grower have a testing lab to check on the peak oil harvesting time?
  7. Is there a way to check that the crops were harvested at the peak time?
  8. Was there a delay in between harvesting and taking the crops to the still and cookers?
  9. Does the distillery personally properly know the art of how to pack the cookers, administer the steam, maintain the proper minimum temperatures and pressure, continuously monitor the process, and make sure that the oils contain all of the components?
  10. What does the supplier do with oils that may be of an inferior grade? Do they discard them or still sell them?
  11. How does the supplier checks on the grade of the oil?
  12. What type of lids do the cookers use (cone-topped lids are better)?
  13. Does the supplier supplement the distillation process with solvents to extract the additional oil from the plant?
  14. Does the supplier bottle their oil directly from the distillery, or do they modify the composition?
  15. What data have they shown for testing their oil alongside other companies?

This is a very valuable and sought-after oil. It was considered more valuable than gold in ancient times. Only those that had great wealth and abundance could possess it.

Thieves is a blend exclusive to Young Living, and it is probably our most popular blend.

Many people say that it smells like Christmas. It is a blend of 5 oils (Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary, Lemon, and Eucalyptus).

Thieves essential oil blend was inspired by the legend of four 15th century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals that they used to boost their immune systems while robbing the dead and dying.

Young Living’s one-of-a-kind Thieves blend, crafted in the spirit of that legendary combination, can be found in all of our Thieves products
