DIY Floating Wood Shelf & Home Update!

by Laura on January 15, 2013

Well it only took a couple of months to actually “finish” this little shelf. Maybe because I {me} built this.
With no help from MM !!
 It takes maybe an  hour from start to finish.
“Life Happens”
This perfect shelf resides over the kids toilet,
which holds a vintage tool box,
which hides the toilet paper :)

To Build:
I used left over 1×2 boards to make a box.
The box was then covered by leftover 1/2 inch Permabond plywood from our cabinet build.
Finishing nails
Wood Glue
Wood Filler
Dark Walnut Stain
I built a simple box foundation with wood glue and nails.
Okay, I hardly think through my plans, I just go, which drives MM batty.
Example A: I placed a bottom piece on the shelf, but now I didn’t have an easy way to attach this thing to the wall.
So I removed the bottom piece so that I could nail directly into studs.
make sense??!!:)
So I nailed this to the wall using the back board seen, into studs.
(that is the most level thing I’ve built)
After it was nailed to the wall I attached the front plywood and side plywood.
I then Filled in all cracks with stainable wood filler,
then stained the entire piece in Dark Walnut.
I did not attach a board to the underside.
You totally could, our shelf is low so you can’t see the underside,
unless you really want to strain your neck for a look.
{I’m so PROUD}
UPDATE:
Our “remodel” has been a little slow going since the holidays, but we are now moving it!
The Sunroom area off of the living room is getting painted.
new trim
new lights
new/recylced DIY CHEAP WOOD FLOORS!
{im so excited about this!}
Built in Herb Garden{say what}
Built in Banquet seating/bookshelves
we got a ways to go, here is where we are…
 The blue paint is a amazing grey/warm color that was an oops gallon from TreeHouse.
I love their paint, it’s low VOC, so it has virtually no smell to it.
I did thin it out with water and it still had amazing coverage.
&
OMG, This little paint guy at Home Depot made my day.
He gave me this paint chip book, for FREEEEEE!
Everyone I ask usually makes you pay{holla}

Love the floating shelf! What a great idea, and so good for you that you did all by yourself! Now you can build something even bigger. Thanks for sharing!
