Day 29 : Being Frugal for Reals

by Laura on October 30, 2012

This happens about every couple of months. I get hooked.obsessed.crazed. over life changing habits.
Couponing, Vegan, & now Frugal Living.
Hey at least these are good for the body, pocketbook type addictions.
I still coupon , but not for anything processed, refined, or GMO. Mainly toiletries.
I’m still a wannabe Vegan. Our family eats waaayyy healthier than we did 1 year ago.

So now I’m into this Frugal  Living kick. My brother-in-law Mateo finds the coolest blogs, written by pretty cool people, and he passes this on to me.
Northwest Edible is pretty awesome. This link is one that Mateo sent to me.
Someday I will have a hippie pantry!!
I found Mr.Money Mustache through Northwest Edible.
The title for his blog,
 “Financial Freedom Through Badassity”.
That alone inspires. He has kicked my butt into gear living an awesome frugal life. Not Ramen noodle Frugal either.

So I have started at post 1 on this site and I’m reading through.
Already this week on my steps to being FRUGAL:
1. Canceled our DirectTV.…say what!
– we are saving about $50 monthly!
We have a newer flat screen that has a built in antenna.
We pick up all of our local HD channels for Free.Free.Free
+ We subscribe to NetFlix.
and our beloved Disney Channel has free episodes online {gag…that’s for the kid withdrawls}
More time for good reads, playing outside,
&  ummm remodeling a whole freaking house!

2. Car Insurance Trimmed
Both of our cars are paid off, so down to liability only coverage…saving us $30 month
3. Paid Credit Cards
We have been working with a debt management company for about 2 years. This consolidated ALL of our credit card debt that had accumulated from several years before.
This company helped us negotiate and reduce payments.
Anyways our last payment was in October!!! saving us $254 month….Holla

4. Cut back on the clothes dryer –
I’m only using the dryer for socks, undies, towels. Everything else gets hanged dried.  The Dryer is the biggest electric hog in the house.
On our last bill we used 1257 kwh, thats about 300 more than the national average…yikes! add that to the great City of Austin increasing electric rates again, it’s getting serious ’round here.

5. Next on the chopping block AT&T with your ridiculous high fees for my Iphone. {I’m kind nervous about this one}  but Mr.MM pays $10 month for his Iphone service…eeek!
So starting in November we will be saving…$334
That’s a nice remodel fund right there.

OKay so what are your frugal tips for your fam…I’m in info absorption mode!!

Heya! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any issues with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no backup.
Do you have any solutions to protect against
