Day 2: Staining a Mantle….with Fire?
Markie Mark may be a pyromaniac, Aves is following in his ways too!!
On our last mantle MM did this cool “burn the wood” thing, so he did that treatment again on this mantle.
1. Sand the Wood
MM started out using 60grit, just to get the finish off, then used 220 fine grit for a smooth finish.
{and remove that dentil moulding, which I despise, can’t stand it!}
2. Burn the Wood
Take your  Butane flame burner and simply brush the flame over the wood surface.
{maybe have some water nearby?}
It blackens all the grain lines, making them more defined.

{I actually love the raw look,you could just seal it at this point…. it just blended in too much with our rock!}

3. Stain the wood.
I used Dark Walnut {my favorite color}.
I prefer using a rag and dipping this in the stain then applying with the grain.
I think it gets more in the grooves this way.
You can see the black lines through the stain!!
This brand already has a “sealer” in it, but I like that glossy look. I finished this piece off with polyurethane to seal it.

And ……we are officially welcoming Miss Harlow to the Family!!
 Annie & Harlow of course needed matching turquoise collars.
This is the best picture I could get without them chasing Aiden!
I think she’s pretty happy!

I LOVE the mantle!! And Harlow does look happy :). Makes me sad/happy at the same time but we know she’s going to a good home and will love waking up to Annie every day! Love y’all!

That is pretty hard core diy-ing, I’m so impressed! I love the idea of 31 days of remodeling, cant wait to see where you end up come November.
